tipos moviles

Tipos Móviles is a communicational artists’ project developed as a poster size (100 x 70cm) artist book, printed in a short edition. The editions accumulate into a travelling exhibition, and it has been exhibited so far in ten different cities in Europe and America. Each exhibition deploys indoors as well as outdoors, as a book and as a fly-poster at the same time.

This Project was initially developed by artist and curator Luis Romero in Caracas, in collaboration with the independent publishing company "La Industria". ‘Tipos móviles UK’ in 2004 marks the moment when the project was expanded by London based artist Jaime Gili.

Generally, the Project deals with communication, language, and public space. Tipos móviles initiated in a printers workshop situated in Caño Amarillo, Caracas. Standard is one of the last remaining printers working with wooden type. The press, from the late 19th Century, arrived to Caracas in the 1930’s.

Mr. Rogelio, a Cuba-born man who arrived to Venezuela in the forties, has worked with this machine for 50 years. He is now 80 years old, and even though he loves his job, he would like to retire soon, therefore the workshop could dangerously be approaching its end. The machine is in near-perfect condition, but the space in which it is placed is in very bad shape.

Jaime Gili took the project to a letterpress in the outskirts of Buenos Aires for the third part of the project. Using a machine from 1904 much cherished by their owners. In both cities, the machines are mostly used nowadays to advertise gigs of popular music.

After Argentina came Colombia, in two cities: Cartagena and Bogotá. Luis Romero was invited to make a book for "Cart(a)jena", a language festival in 2007 He worked with local artists to produce a larger book, and the posters were posted all around the beautiful town of Cartagena. And the same year Jaime Gili was invited to make Tipos Móviles Bogotá, inviting ten artists from the city to work in an old printer´s workshop, with the help of Romero, Luisa Ungar and Alejandro Mancera.

Generally the project has developed as follows: Once an edition of 100 of each poster is printed, some 25 – 50 copies are made into books, these are distributed amongst participants. Some copies are temporarily exhibited in libraries or bookshops in institutions and public galleries. The remaining 50 will be sent to places where collaborators and members of a growing network will show them in indoor and outdoor spaces.
