MASHRABIYA
COMMA 04
Bloomberg Space, London
2009
As part of the COMMA series, which uses the gallery spaces at the Bloomberg building in Finsbury square, this installation began in the ground floor gallery but expanded out over eight floors of offices within the building. The work was visible from inside the workstations as well as from the atrium and the communal spaces. The title of the show, Mashrabiya, comes from a word that describes a window structure in certain styles of Arabic architecture, a structure that reduces the amount of light let in through a mesh of intricate repetitive patterns. Here the vinyl panels block the light slightly but radiate colour, and the centre of the composition, is reminiscent of one of Big Brother’s eyes.
